Maca (Martacarmela Sotelo)
Maca reduces her work to the most basic geometric two-dimensional shapes lending it a sense of the primitive. This sense, is further enhanced by her use of basic colors and natural pigments such as Cochinilla Grana and Curcuma or Saffron. The simplicity of her work only adds to its remarkable aesthetic quality.
"We favor the simple expression of the complex thought. We are for the large shape because it has the impact of the unequivocal... We are for the flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth... There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing. We assert that the subject is crucial and only that subject matter is valid which is tragic timeless. That is why we profess spiritual kinship with primitive and archaic art"
Mark Rothko 1943
